Harry McKay has always appeared to have all the tools of a superstar key forward, and at just 23 years old he might be already there. He was arguably the best forward in the league last season on a Carlton team which exactly offering up silver service, and his 58 goals were enough to edge out Hawkins for the 2021 Coleman Medal. McKay will once again lead the chances to take out this prestigious award in 2022, and with plenty of improvement still left in him and his Blues side potentially also getting better, he has to be considered a great chance of going back-to-back.

The man he beat in Hawkins might be 33 years of age, but incredibly the Cats’ superstar still seems to be getting better every year and is another Coleman Medal fancy in 2022. He won the award for the first time in 2020 before finishing second last season, and as part of the most formidable key forward pairing in the league he should again be there or thereabouts this season. Likewise his partner in crime in Jeremy Cameron, whose 34 goals in the home and away season came in just 12 games. If he can stay injury free, expect the 2019 Coleman Medal winner to kick plenty of goals in 2022.

A couple of players with significantly less experience than the aforementioned pair could also consider themselves a chance, with the King twins precocious talent likely to see them both in the Coleman Medal race for many years to come. At the age of just 21, Gold Coast’s Ben put 47 on the board last year, while Max managed 38 including a couple of bags of five or more. The lanky brothers from Melbourne are both raw in their own ways, but their height, long arms and marking ability mean that they could easily be the best two forwards in the league in the years to come, and could easily improve significantly in 2022.

If he can get enough games under his belt, Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin might also present some value. Buddy has dealt with plenty of injuries over the past couple of years, but he still kicked 48 goals in the 2021 home and away season including three bags of five goals plus, so though age might be catching up with his body, the talent has not gone anywhere.
